Understanding the eAU System
In Germany, electronic sick leave certificates (eAU) have replaced paper-based sick notes since 2022. These digital certificates are issued by healthcare providers and include a diagnosis code that is used for billing purposes by health insurance companies.
Receiving and Reviewing Your eAU
After a doctor's visit, you will receive your eAU electronically. The certificate will be sent directly to your health insurance provider and you will receive a copy via email or text message.
You can view and download your eAU by logging into your health insurance provider's online portal or using the "Meine eAU" app.
Checking on Sick Pay
Once your eAU has been issued, you can start receiving sick pay from your employer. If you have not received sick pay within a reasonable time frame, you can check the status of your eAU by contacting your health insurance provider or your employer's payroll department.
To ensure that your eAU has been received, you can contact your health insurance company directly. They will be able to confirm whether or not they have received the eAU and provide you with an update on its status.
