NIFRS Statement: Derelict Building Fire at Saintfield Road, Belfast
Firefighters Battle Blaze at Abandoned Building
At approximately 11:00 PM on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) was called to respond to a fire at a derelict building on Saintfield Road in Belfast.
Four fire appliances and approximately 20 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The fire was located in a two-story building that had been vacant for several years.
Arson Suspected
The NIFRS has determined that the fire was started deliberately. Police are investigating the incident as arson.
NIFRS Incident Commander Aidan Jennings said, "This was a significant fire that could have easily spread to neighboring properties. We are grateful that no one was injured."
Investigation Ongoing
The NIFRS is working with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to investigate the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
NIFRS is urging anyone with information about the fire to contact the PSNI on 101, quoting reference number 1234/010323.
