Cardinals Manager Mike Shildt Inks Three-Year Contract Extension

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, a finalist for the National League Manager of the Year Award, has agreed to a new three-year contract that will keep him with the team through the 2022 season.

The contract, which has a team option for 2023, was announced by Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak on Tuesday.

"Mike has done an outstanding job leading our team since taking over in 2018," Mozeliak said in a statement. "He is a great communicator, motivator, and tactician. We are excited to have him continue to lead our Cardinals."

Shildt took over as Cardinals manager on an interim basis in July 2018 after the firing of Mike Matheny. He led the Cardinals to a 90-72 record and a berth in the National League Division Series that season.

In 2019, Shildt guided the Cardinals to a 91-71 record and the National League Central Division title. The Cardinals lost to the Washington Nationals in the National League Division Series.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to manage the Cardinals," Shildt said in a statement. "I love this team and this city. I am excited about the future of this organization."

The Cardinals are coming off a disappointing 2020 season in which they finished with a 30-28 record and missed the playoffs.

Shildt, who is considered one of the rising stars in the managerial ranks, is expected to lead the Cardinals back to contention in 2021.
