Hugh Freeze Named Head Coach at Auburn University

A New Era Begins on the Plains

AUBURN, Ala. --

Hugh Freeze has been named the 31st head football coach in Auburn's 129-year history, Athletics Director John Cohen announced on Monday.

Freeze, 53, comes to Auburn after spending the past five seasons as the head coach at Liberty University. During his tenure with the Flames, he led the program to three bowl games and a pair of FBS Independent National Championships.

"We are thrilled to welcome Hugh Freeze to Auburn University," Cohen said. "Hugh is a proven winner who has a track record of success both on and off the field. He is a man of high character who will represent Auburn with pride and dignity."

Freeze is a native of Oxford, Mississippi, and played quarterback at Ole Miss from 1986 to 1990. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Arkansas State in 1992 and has since worked at Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Liberty.

"I am honored and humbled to be named the head football coach at Auburn University," Freeze said. "Auburn is a special place with a rich tradition and passionate fan base. I am excited to get to work and lead this program back to the top."

Freeze takes over an Auburn program that went 6-7 in 2022 under former head coach Bryan Harsin. The Tigers have not won an SEC Championship since 2010 and have not been to a New Year's Six bowl game since 2017.

Freeze is expected to bring a high-scoring, up-tempo offense to Auburn. He has a reputation for developing quarterbacks and has coached several NFL players, including Malik Willis, Robert Nkemdiche, and Shea Patterson.
