Coyotes Announce New Home Arena at Arizona State University
Sun Devils Stadium to Host NHL Team Beginning in 2022-23 Season
The Arizona Coyotes have reached an agreement with Arizona State University to play their home games at the Sun Devils' 5,000-seat arena beginning in the 2022-23 season.
The move is the final step in the Meruelo family's promise to keep the Coyotes in Arizona. The team had been playing in Gila River Arena in Glendale since 2003, but the lease on that facility expires after the 2021-22 season.
"This is a historic day for the Arizona Coyotes," said team president and CEO Xavier Gutierrez. "We are thrilled to be partnering with Arizona State University and playing in such a world-class facility. This move will allow us to provide our fans with an unparalleled experience and continue to grow the sport of hockey in Arizona."
The Coyotes' new home arena is located on the ASU campus in Tempe, just a few miles from downtown Phoenix. The arena is the home of the Sun Devils' men's ice hockey, women's ice hockey, women's gymnastics, women's volleyball, and men's wrestling teams.
The Coyotes hope to develop the first-ever privately funded sports arena and entertainment district in Arizona history around their new home. The district would include a hotel, restaurants, retail stores, and other amenities.
"We are excited to welcome the Arizona Coyotes to Arizona State University," said ASU President Michael Crow. "This partnership will provide our students, faculty, staff, and community with access to world-class hockey and entertainment. We look forward to working with the Coyotes to create a vibrant and successful sports and entertainment destination in Tempe."
